Man dies after bucket truck overturns

Coudersport, PA – 50-year-old Lance Newton was killed in a tree-removal accident Monday afternoon at the Eulalia Cemetery.

According to Chief Bryan Phelps of the Coudersport Volunteer Fire Department, Newton was removing the top of a pine tree. When the large top fell it broke a large limb that was serving as the anchor point and struck a bucket truck.

“The large limb then crashed into the fully-extended arm and bucket, ejecting the operator from the bucket as it collapsed to the ground,” he said.

Newton died of blunt force after he hit the ground.

Newton was a retired US army major, who taught health and physical education classes as well as running his tree removal business.
