University worker dies after being pulled into a wood chipper

Pretoria, South Africa – 25 year old Mokhiti Johannes Moeti died while working at the University of Pretoria’s LC De Villers campus. Moeti was an employee of Servest, a facility management company hired by the university. A witness and co-worker, Mulisa Mabudafhasi, stated that incident left him traumatized. Mabudafhasi said that the two were working under pressure and were left to operate the machine alone. He continued by stating, Moeti was chipping brush when his hand and glove were pulled into the machine. Within a second Moeti’s body was pulled through the chipper. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The university’s spokesperson, Rikus Delport, stated an investigative team has been launched to look into the matter. “Both Servest and UP are working hand in hand with SAPS and the department of labour as they investigate the matter. The investigative team has thus far been unable to conclusively identify the root cause of this fatal accident, however, the SAPS and the department of labour are still finalizing their investigation.”
