Two men reportedly injured by a falling tree in the Otago township of Waihola have been taken to Dunedin Hospital, one with serious injuries.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand Milton senior station officer Steve Griffiths said pair had been felling gum trees on a private property when a tree fell “the wrong way”. It was believed a branch from the tree hit both men on the head.
“It was a reasonable-sized branch,” Griffiths said.
The original call, received about 2pm on Saturday, indicated people might be trapped under a tree but both men were clear when the Milton fire crew reached the Castle St address.
“We provided medical coverage until the ambulance crew arrived,” Griffiths said.
A rural fire crew from Waihola also attended.
A St John spokeswoman said one ambulance transported two people to Dunedin Hospital, one with serious injuries and another with moderate.
