Tree climber dies after palm fronds collapse on him

Hacienda Heights, CA – 49-year-old Simon Lemus died while climbing a palm tree in California. Lemus became trapped at the base of the tree’s canopy when the fronds collapsed on him. Lemus’ teenage daughter was on the job with him when she his heard screams for help.

Officers responded to the scene at around 4 PM. Firefighters used a ladder truck to get to Lemus who was about 40 feet up the tree. By 5:15 PM they had strapped his body to the trunk of the tree and were working to get him down. Around 5:45 p.m., he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Lemus’ family, he had been trimming trees more than half his life and worked with a local company. On the day of the accident, he was doing a side job to help out a friend.
