Man loses part of his leg in wood chipper accident

UPDATE 11/18/18: The victim has been identified as 31-year-old James Blaney. He told The Cape Cod Times that his foot became trapped in the machinery after he attempted to fix a jam.

South Yarmouth, MA – A 31-year-old tree service employee was severely injured while using a wood chipper. Police responded to the scene in South Yarmouth at 9:49 AM Friday to find a man profusely bleeding and being treated by co-workers.

According to Yarmouth fire Capt. Thomas Lundquist, the man was using the chipper and he slipped and the machine caught his left leg. Co-workers immediately called for help and hit the reverse bar on the machine but not before the victim lost part of his leg. One worker removed his belt and used it as a tourniquet to control the bleeding. The crew then applied pressure and elevated the leg until authorities arrived.

The victim was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis where he is currently in stable condition.

A wood chipper on the property was being towed by a Triple Crown Tree LLC truck.
