Albany, OR – 62-year-old Ronald Gary Oliver died after a large tree crushed the cab of the excavator he was operating.
Dispatchers received a 911 call at about 3:30 PM from a man screaming for help but the man would not answer the dispatcher’s questions and eventually became unresponsive on the phone. Dispatchers then used the 911 system to get a better location for the caller.
Deputies arrived at the scene about 10 minutes later and eventually were able to find the John Deere excavator with Oliver trapped inside.
Deputies said Oliver had been excavating a treed area on the farm when one of the large trees fell, crushing the cab of the excavator. He was pinned inside and died at the scene.
Linn County Sheriff Jim Yon said several beer cans were found in the excavator and Oliver’s vehicle, indicating alcohol as a possible factor in the accident.
