A 31 year old Masterton man died after being crushed by a tree. The man was part of a logging crew of about 10. He was felling a tree when something did not go according to plan. Crew mates reacted instantly because the victim was in radio and visual contact. Within minutes crew mates were there and attempted to revive the man, but their efforts were unsuccessful. A Wairarapa Rural Fire Fighter mentioned that the location at the time was experiencing “gale force” winds. Nearby Castlepoint recorded gusts of up to 166kmh, but it is unclear if weather played a role in the accident.
