67 year old Keith L. Barrigar was killed Monday in what was called a “freak” accident. When police arrived to the scene they found Barrigar pinned between a split tree trunk. He was felling a tree at a woman’s residence when the tree snapped free from the stump and split horizontally from the cut, up the trunk about 20 feet. The tree sprung back at Barrigar and snapped shut on him causing him to suffocate. He was working alone at the time of the accident. State police senior investigator, Timothy J. Peets, said that the tree’s canopy likely caused the tree to spring back at him. Barrigar was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where his cause of death was determined to be from traumatic asphyxia.
