Bucket operator dies after bucket truck boom malfunctions

Pittsburgh, PA – 34 year old Michael Shiry died while trimming trees in Pittsburgh. According to Pittsburgh Police, Shiry was about 60 feet up in the platform of a bucket truck. For unknown reasons the boom of the lift malfunctioned and fell violently towards the ground. Detectives say Shiry was thrown from the bucket from the force of the collapse. He died instantly after he landed on the ground near the truck.

Reports say that Shiry was an employee of Emery Tree Service and the father of 5 daughters. It is unknown at this time what caused the boom to collapse and if he was wearing a harness at the time of the accident. The cause of the malfunction is under investigation. It was raining with high winds at the time.

Shiry’s death was determined to be blunt force injuries of head, trunk and extremities, and sharp force injury of abdomen.
